Overall Trend
  • In 2016, 15.2% (12.6%, 17.9%) of Chatham-Kent women who gave birth reported smoking during pregnancy which was significantly higher than 7.4% (7.3%, 7.6%) of Ontario women who gave birth overall. 
  • Over time, percentages provincially and locally have been stable with Chatham-Kent generally having a higher prevalence overall.

By Age Group
  • The prevalence of smoking during pregnancy was significantly higher among women younger than age 25.
  • In Chatham-Kent, the prevalence of smoking during pregnancy among women aged 25 and older was significantly higher compared to Ontarians of the same age groups.

Alcohol or Drug Use During Pregnancy

Overall Trend
  • In 2016, 7.4% (5.5%, 9.2%) of Chatham-Kent women who gave birth reported drinking alcohol or using drugs which was significantly higher than 4.3% (4.2%, 4.4%) of Ontario women who gave birth overall. 
  • Over time, percentages provincially and locally have increased, with Chatham-Kent generally having a higher prevalence overall.
